Welcome to Ocracoke
Island, located on the southernmost
tip of the Outer Banks. Accessible by private plane or NCDOT
ferry, Ocracoke's isolation has become an
intrigue to thousands
of tourists each summer. Don't expect McDonald's or WalMart, but
expect to slow down to the island's pace. Let
the island's natural wonders seduce you with moonlit walks, bike
rides alongside the harbor, and 17 miles of untouched seashore.
While planned activities are limited, the island offers many
things to do at your leisure. Take one of our bikes off the
beaten path and explore back roads and soundside streets. Go
kayaking out into the Pamlico Sound. Visit the Nature Trail and
Ocracoke Ponies off Highway 12. Listen to porch talks at the
Ocracoke Preservation Museum. Play BINGO on Tuesday nights in
the Ocracoke Fire Hall. Enjoy live music at local restaurants
and at the Ocrafolk Opry. Watch the charter boats come in with
their catch. The on-site managers at The Castle are glad to
point you in the right direction and offer suggestions.
The history of the island includes important roles in the
Civil War, World War II, and a lifestyle still reflected in the
locals' lives.
